Types of Modeling

In general there are three primary categories of modeling work.  Fashion, Promotional and Commercial or Print work.  To see where you might best fit try our Career Advisor

1. Fashion (includes Runway)
Tall and thin is in! Fashion models work on the runway and promote clothes and beauty items in magazines, newspapers, and other print media and occasionally on television. Because the items they promote are intended to make the customer feel attractive and beautiful, fashion models must be attractive as well.

1A. Plus Size (fashion)
Plus Size Modeling is sub-category of fashion and is primarily for larger, more full-figured women. As more and more consumers wear larger sizes there is a growing demand for plus-size models.

1B. Petite (fashion)
Petite Modeling is a sub-category of fashion. This is for a select few who are extremely good looking, yet are smaller in stature.

2. Promotional (also known as beauty or swimsuit)
Promotional models are “live” models. They represent a wide variety of products at events such as trade shows, conventions and in-store product demonstrations. Other examples of promotional models are the Hawaiian Tropic girls or the Budweiser girls.

2A. Artistic and Nude
Artistic and Nude Modeling includes artistic photography for magazines, electronic media and "high" Art.  Generally models must be over 18 and very athletically fit.

3. Commercial or Print
Print models represent a wide variety of products and services from cars to household products, soft drinks to health insurance ads, and everything in between. Because print models can represent such a diverse range of products, they are very diverse in the way they look. They can range in age from 4 to 74! By far, the largest percentage of bookings in the industry is in this field.

3A. Child Modeling
Child Modeling is a sub-category of Commercial or Print Modeling, although on occasion children are requested for both Promotional and Fashion modeling the majority of work falls under Commercial or Print modeling.  Ages range from 4 to 12.

3B. Teen Modeling
Teen Modeling is a sub-category of Commercial or Print Modeling, although on occasion teens are requested for both Promotional and Fashion modeling the majority of work falls under Commercial or Print modeling.  Ages range from 13 to 17.
